The oldest soft drink in the world, for adults only…

In 1783, when Jacob Schweppe created a new product which converted into the first soft drink, little did he know that the brand would not only survive two centuries later, but that his trademark would be associated with sophisticated eccentricity.

Schweppe, a German born Swiss jeweller, invented the first system to carbonate water. After a start in Geneva he moved on to England where he established himself. By 1837 Queen Victoria had appointed Schweppes as the official manufacturer of soda to the British Court.

Innovation has been at the forefront of Schweppes strategy, and the brand has been introducing new ranges of products since the 19th century, such as Schweppes aerated lemonade in 1835 and Indian tonic in 1870. In 1986 it launched its Dry range (Orange, lemon, exotic) and in 1992 the first Schweppes Light was marketed. In 1999 it launched its citrus line, which was complemented with a light version in 2002. After 200 years in the market its bottle needed a facelift, so it was redesigned in 2003 in the spirit of the original bottle shape. Since them, many different new flavours have been introduced, the latest ones being Schweppes Peach and Schweppes Grape. The brand now offers a full range of flavours, from Indian Tonic to carbonated fruit flavours. In Spain, Schweppes Spirit, a range of unique sparking fruit drinks, was launched in 2007.

Schweppes has been an international brand since its inception. As early as 1877 it opened a factory in Australia and, in 1884, another one in New York. However, its full fledge global expansion began in 1950. Today Schweppes as a brand is present in almost all countries worldwide. Its strong personality – refined while eccentric – appeals to mature and hedonistic urbanites, independent, social and dynamic people who are open to new experiences and challenge the ordinary. In fact, it is the only soft drink targeted exclusively to an adult crowd.

Its classy and innovative character has helped Schweppes to lead many of the markets where it is present. In Spain, France and Belgium it is the number one tonic. It holds the third position in the fruit carbonated soft drinks segment in France where one out of every four French households consumes it regularly. Looking back we can affirm Schweppes has come a long way and still has great potential as a truly iconic brand in the soft drinks market.
